Ever since moving to CA 6 years ago, I have yet to find a dentist office that makes you feel comfortable and at ease from start to finish until I visited Center Plaza Dentistry. From the front office staff to the hygienist to the doctor, everyone was extremely pleasant, kind, and patient. I’m not sure how I missed this place for so long and wished I had known about them when I first moved here. They are so welcoming and gentle that I’ve transferred the rest of my family over to CPD. Thank you so much, CPD, for your patience and care!
Most people know the basics of dental care: brush, floss, and see your dentist. But building small, consistent habits into your daily routine can make a bigger impact on your oral health than you might think. Whether you’re great about brushing or just trying to get back on track, these simple strategies are easy to stick with—and they can help prevent bigger problems down the road.
Here are seven easy habits that can keep your smile healthier, fresher, and cavity-free.
1. Brush After Breakfast, Not Before
It’s common to brush first thing in the morning, but if you’re eating breakfast afterward, you’re missing the opportunity to clean your teeth when it counts. Brushing after meals removes sugars, acids, and bacteria that can build up during breakfast. If you’re in a rush, wait at least 30 minutes after eating to protect enamel, or rinse with water until you can brush later.
2. Make Flossing Part of Your Wind-Down Routine
Flossing doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Try tying it to something relaxing, like your nightly skincare or a few minutes of reading. Keep floss picks or string floss in a visible spot in your bathroom to make the habit easier to remember. Just once a day is enough to clean more of your tooth surface that brushing can’t reach.
3. Drink More Water, Especially Between Meals
Staying hydrated is good for your whole body, but it’s especially helpful for your mouth. Water helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and support saliva production. Encourage your family to reach for water instead of sugary drinks or juices between meals. Bonus: it helps prevent dry mouth and bad breath, too.
4. Swap Out Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months
Old toothbrushes (or brush heads, if you use an electric one) don’t clean as effectively and they can collect bacteria over time. A good rule of thumb? Replace your brush at the start of each season. If you’ve been sick, replace it sooner to avoid reintroducing germs into your mouth.
5. Don’t Skip Your Tongue
Bacteria love to live on the surface of your tongue. If you’re brushing your teeth but still dealing with bad breath, this might be why. Gently brushing or using a tongue scraper each day can freshen your breath and reduce bacteria levels in your mouth, improving your overall oral health.
6. Be Mindful of Snacking Habits
Snacking throughout the day—especially on starchy or sugary foods—gives bacteria more chances to create acids that wear down enamel. Instead of grazing, try to enjoy your snacks with meals. Rinse your mouth with water or chew sugar-free gum after snacking to reduce buildup until you can brush again.
7. See Your Dentist Even When Nothing Hurts
It’s easy to skip dental visits if nothing feels wrong, but regular cleanings and checkups help catch problems early, before they become painful or expensive to treat. Most people benefit from twice-a-year visits, but your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your needs.
Oral health doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few smart daily habits and regular check-ins with your dental team, you can prevent cavities, protect your gums, and keep your smile looking its best. Not sure where to start? Schedule your next visit and let your dental team guide you with personalized tips that fit your lifestyle.
